If you are targeting a McKinsey Business Analyst role starting in 2027, the calendar has already made most of your decisions for you. The national deadline is 11 August 2026, and it covers both the full-time Business Analyst role and the summer internship.1 Applications opened on 1 July.2

That leaves a narrow window, and the standard advice you will find elsewhere is not useful in it. Telling someone with days left to "start preparing three months in advance" is not a plan. What follows is a triage sequence: what to fix, in what order, and what to accept is not getting fixed this cycle.

Two things follow from that table. First, if BCG was on your list for this cycle, that door has already shut, and the honest read is that you are now recruiting for McKinsey and Bain. Second, Bain's internship deadline sits three weeks behind McKinsey's, which means the work you do for McKinsey between now and 11 August is not wasted if you miss the bar. It rolls straight into a Bain application with time to spare.

With McKinsey and BCG both closed, Bain's 31 August internship deadline is the only MBB target left in this cycle. Anything you drafted for McKinsey transfers with light editing, so this is a rewrite job rather than a fresh start.

Read the spread in that table rather than the individual dates. BCG closed its internship window in early June, McKinsey in mid August, Bain at the end of August. A candidate who waited until "consulting recruiting season" in the autumn missed all three.

Deadlines have moved earlier, and that is the real story

The 11 August date is not an isolated fact. It sits inside a structural shift in consulting recruiting timing. McKinsey opened its 2027 intern application portal on 1 January 2026 with a March deadline, where in previous years intern deadlines did not arrive until the summer.3 University career offices have noted the same compression, with some firms opening applications in late March 2026 for summer 2027 positions and other firms shifting their own dates to match MBB.4

If you are reading this for the 2028 cycle, that is the takeaway to act on. Assume the window opens earlier than it did last year, and treat any published deadline as a date that can move forward rather than back.

This was written as a short triage plan. With a full cycle ahead of you it is better read as an ordering: what to do first, and what not to waste early time on.

First: the resume, and only the resume

The resume is the only artefact in your application that gets read before a human decides anything. Everything else is downstream. Do it first and do not move on until it is finished.

• Rewrite every bullet so it leads with an outcome, not a responsibility. "Managed a team of four" is a responsibility. "Cut turnaround time 30 percent across a four-person team" is an outcome.
• Quantify at least six bullets. If you cannot find a number, you have probably chosen the wrong experience to include.
• Cut anything from before university unless it is genuinely exceptional.
• One page. No exceptions at Business Analyst level.

Second: cover letter, then submit

Do not spend a week on the cover letter. It matters less than candidates believe, and the marginal return past a solid draft is close to zero. Write one page: why consulting, why the firm specifically, and one concrete piece of evidence that you can do the work. Then submit. Do not sit on a finished application waiting for the deadline, because slots fill on a rolling basis and applying at the first deadline gives you the most consideration.1

Third: Solve, before cases

This is where most candidates get the sequencing wrong. They spend their last week doing case interviews. But between submitting and the first interview sits the Solve assessment, and it screens out a large share of applicants before anyone reads a word of your case performance. Case prep is the right work for the interview months. Solve is the right work for the gap before them.

The current assessment comes in two formats and you do not choose which one you get. Your invitation email tells you: a 65-minute invite means Redrock Study followed by Sea Wolf, while an 85-minute invite adds a third module, the Sustainable Futures Lab.5 The third module rolled out from March 2026 and is behavioural rather than analytical, closer to a situational judgement test than a case.6

A few days is not enough to master all three. It is enough to remove the two things that actually sink candidates: unfamiliarity with the interface, and running out of time. Do one full timed run of each module you are likely to face, then a second run focused only on pacing.

With real time available, run each module repeatedly under the clock rather than reading about them. The failure mode is almost never conceptual. It is pacing, and pacing only improves with timed repetition.

Fourth: cases

Case preparation is the longest of the four and the one you can do while waiting. Work through full cases end to end rather than drilling frameworks, and get live reps with a partner as early as you can.

Planning for the 2028 cycle

Assume the 2028 intern window opens in the final quarter of 2026 or the first weeks of 2027, and work backwards from there. Have the resume finished before the portal opens. Have Solve familiarity built before you submit. That sequencing is the whole advantage, and it costs nothing except doing the work in the right order. One thing to watch going into the 2028 cycle: if the compression trend continues, the intern window could open in the last quarter of 2026. Build your materials now and you will not be writing them under a short clock next year.
