Why Alvarez & Marsal cover letters matter

Alvarez & Marsal is a management consulting and professional services firm with a distinct identity: it is known for turnaround management, restructuring, and performance improvement, particularly in situations of financial stress or organisational change. Candidates who write a generic consulting cover letter, without demonstrating any awareness of A&M's specific positioning, will not progress.

A&M recruits at moderate volume but places significant weight on practical experience and results orientation. The cover letter is where you make the case that your background is a direct fit for the type of work the firm does, not just for consulting in general. Evidence of operational impact, financial analysis, or work in complex or distressed situations is highly relevant here.

The firm's culture is notably action-oriented and direct. A cover letter that is tight, results-focused, and free of generic consulting language will resonate far better than one padded with adjectives about impact and leadership.

What Alvarez & Marsal looks for

Alvarez & Marsal evaluates cover letters on criteria that reflect its focus on performance improvement, restructuring, and results-driven consulting. Each one maps directly to how the firm's interviewers will assess your fit.

Results and operational impact
A&M works in situations where results are urgent and measurable. Evidence of driving a tangible outcome, particularly in a turnaround, cost reduction, or operational improvement context, is directly relevant.
Financial and analytical fluency
A&M engagements frequently involve financial modelling, distressed balance sheets, and performance benchmarking. Comfort with numbers and financial concepts is a baseline expectation.
Sector or situational depth
A&M has strong practices in financial services, healthcare, real estate, and private equity. Connecting your background to a specific sector or type of engagement is more compelling than a general statement of interest.
Action orientation
The firm moves quickly and expects its people to take ownership of problems immediately. Brief evidence that you have done the same, particularly in ambiguous or high-pressure situations, signals cultural fit.

Structure and format

A Alvarez & Marsal cover letter follows a predictable four-paragraph structure. Recruiters scan quickly, so each paragraph should do exactly one job. Deviating from this structure is rarely worth the risk.

1Opening paragraphRole, source, one-line hook
2Why consultingEvidence from your background
3Why Alvarez & MarsalSpecific and non-transferable
4ClosingBrief, confident, action-oriented

Beyond structure, format signals professionalism. Recruiters notice a crowded page or an unusual font before they read a single sentence.

LengthOne page, 3 to 4 paragraphs
Font size10 to 11pt with comfortable margins
HeaderYour name and contact details at the top
SalutationAddress by name if known; "Dear Recruiting Team" if not
File formatPDF, named FirstLast_Alvarez & Marsal_CoverLetter.pdf

Section-by-section breakdown

The four-paragraph structure gives you a clear brief for each section. Below is what each paragraph needs to accomplish, along with concrete examples of the gap between a weak version and a strong one.

1. Opening paragraph

State the role and office you are applying to, where you found the position, and one sentence that frames why consulting makes sense for your background. Do not open with "I am writing to express my interest in." It is the most common opening line in consulting applications and signals nothing distinctive about you.

What not to sayWhat to say instead
"Alvarez & Marsal's entrepreneurial culture and its reputation for challenging, impactful work make it an outstanding place to develop as a consultant." "A&M's Restructuring practice, and specifically its work on operational turnarounds in the retail sector, connects directly with the working capital improvement programme I led at my previous role, which returned a loss-making division to profitability within two years."

2. Why consulting

This paragraph answers the question every recruiter asks when reading a cover letter: why would someone with your background want to become a consultant? The cover letter is not the place to summarise your resume. The recruiter has already read it. What they want to know is what those experiences meant to you, and what they reveal about why consulting is the right next step. A two-sentence reflection on a specific project will always outperform a paragraph that simply lists what you have already done.

What not to sayWhat to say instead
"During my time at [Company], I led a cross-functional team of six and delivered a cost reduction project ahead of schedule, which is detailed further in my resume." "Leading that cost reduction project showed me how much I enjoy working through problems that have no obvious answer. It made me want to do that kind of work across industries, not just one company."

3. Why Alvarez & Marsal

This is the paragraph where most A&M cover letters lose ground. Writing that you chose Alvarez & Marsal because of its 'entrepreneurial culture and challenging work' tells the recruiter nothing. Your reason for A&M needs to reflect an understanding of what the firm actually does: the type of engagements it takes on, the situations it operates in, and why that specific work appeals to you.

What not to sayWhat to say instead
"Alvarez & Marsal's reputation for innovation and its collaborative culture make it the ideal place for me to grow as a consultant." "Alvarez & Marsal's Climate and Sustainability practice, and specifically the work on green hydrogen economics I read in the 2024 report, aligns directly with the infrastructure projects I have been working on."

4. Closing paragraph

Keep it short. Thank the reader for their time, note that you have attached your resume, and say that you look forward to discussing the role. Three sentences is enough. A&M values directness, and a concise close signals that you understand the firm's culture.

Do's and don'ts

Do
Reference A&M's restructuring, turnaround, or performance improvement focus specifically
Use one concrete example to support each claim you make
Read the letter out loud before submitting
Keep it to one page with comfortable margins and font size
Tailor the "why Alvarez & Marsal" paragraph per office or practice area
Add something new that is not already visible on your resume
Don't
Use words like "passionate," "dynamic," or "team player"
Write a reason for Alvarez & Marsal that could apply to any MBB firm
Repeat bullet points or experience already on your resume
Open with "I am writing to express my interest in"
Submit as a .docx file or use an unconventional font
Write a generic strategy consulting letter — A&M's work is operationally distinct
