The US windows

The two prior-cycle rows are included deliberately. They show the pattern holding: a mid-September internship deadline preceded by an early-September full-time deadline, repeating year on year.2 If you are planning for a future cycle, that is a more reliable guide than any single year's date.

Why first come, first served changes your plan

Most firms tell you to apply early and leave you to infer why. OC&C says it outright: a set number of vacancies per office, allocated in the order applications arrive.1

With only two US offices, Boston and New York, the pools are small and there is no third city to absorb overflow. If you have a strong office preference, the practical read is that applying in the first week of the window is worth more than any amount of polishing in the fourth.

You should expect a confirmation email within 48 hours of submitting, and OC&C asks candidates who do not receive one to get in touch.4 Worth checking, given how much rides on your submission being logged.

What the internship actually involves

OC&C describes the summer internship as a fully immersive and realistic experience of life as an Associate Consultant.1 Interns are staffed on projects and expected to actively contribute to case work, covering data gathering and analysis assignments as well as interpretation and presentation of findings.1

Interns work directly with all levels of the engagement team and are encouraged to take part in office-wide initiatives.1 The firm notes it is a rapidly growing office and asks for candidates with an entrepreneurial spirit willing to engage in firm development, with new hires expected to contribute to project work immediately.1

That last point is a real signal about fit. At a small US presence, the pitch is early responsibility rather than the structured apprenticeship larger firms lead with.

The UK calendar is completely different

If you are applying in the UK rather than the US, none of the dates above apply. OC&C runs three application windows: August to September and March to April for full-time positions, and October to January for summer internships.4

The UK eligibility rule is also stricter. The undergraduate summer internship is open only to students in the penultimate year of their undergraduate or postgraduate degree, and explicitly excludes anyone in the final year of a first degree who is going on to a Masters.4

CVs should be one to two pages.4 The firm also actively recruits graduates who have done further study: PhDs and post-docs join as Associate Consultants alongside undergraduates, with an additional joining bonus for PhD students.4

What OC&C says it screens for

Three attributes come up repeatedly in the firm's own materials: intellectual curiosity demonstrated through consistent academic excellence, extracurricular interests showing a natural flair for commercial awareness and thought leadership, and commercial awareness evidenced through internships, part-time work or volunteering.4

Note what is doing the work in that list. Twice out of three, the firm is asking for evidence of commercial instinct from outside the classroom. A transcript alone does not answer it.

What to do this week

1. Confirm the date on the posting. The live vacancy states 7pm ET on September 18. Check the year and the office list before you plan around it.
2. Pick Boston or New York deliberately. Vacancies are per office and allocated first come, first served.
3. Submit early in the window, not late. This is the firm where that advice is most literally true.
4. Check for the 48 hour confirmation email. Follow up if it does not arrive.
5. If you are UK based, ignore the US dates. Your internship window is October to January.
