Consulting is one of the most popular post-college paths for a reason—but it’s not without tradeoffs. The prestige, pay, and exposure are real, but so are the demands. Before diving in, it’s worth taking a step back to weigh the upside against the lifestyle and structure.
What makes consulting appealing to so many? The work is fast-paced, intellectually challenging, and often puts you in the room with senior executives early in your career. You’ll build a strong toolkit of skills—problem solving, communication, analysis—that apply across industries. And with that experience comes access: top MBAs, high-growth startups, investing roles, and leadership positions all value a consulting background.
But it’s not all polished decks and learning curves. The hours can be long, the pace relentless, and the feedback unfiltered. You may have little control over which industry you’re placed in or which city you’ll be flying to next week. And for some, the culture of constant responsiveness or project-based churn doesn’t align with long-term goals.
