Bain publishes its Associate Consultant base on its own job postings: $112,000, confirmed rather than crowdsourced, which makes it the most reliable entry figure of any MBB firm. Add a $5,000 signing bonus and a performance bonus of up to $22,500 and year one lands near $139,500. Bain also runs the highest bonus ceiling in MBB, which is why its post-MBA packages can top the other two in a strong year.
Bain's US base figures are consistent across all US offices, so an Associate Consultant in Atlanta signs for the same base as one in Boston. Between countries each office pays its local market.
Bain is the only MBB firm that publishes its graduate base, which makes the bottom of this ladder unusually solid. Four things decide what you take home.
The $112,000 figure comes from Bain's own Associate Consultant job posting rather than from crowdsourced estimates, and Glassdoor confirms it is consistent across every US office. That is genuinely useful disclosure: it means you can verify the floor of your offer against a firm-published number, which candidates at McKinsey and BCG cannot do. It also confirms MBB parity, since McKinsey and BCG sit on the same $112,000.
Where Bain separates itself is the top of the bonus band. Post-MBA Consultants can reach a maximum performance bonus of up to $63,000, pushing best-case first-year total to roughly $285,000, above what McKinsey or BCG reach. The tradeoff is variance. A high ceiling means a wide distribution, so two Consultants on the same $192,000 base can finish the year further apart at Bain than at either peer. Some sources put Bain 3 to 5 percent below the other two on typical outcomes while conceding the higher maximum.
Bain renamed several rungs: Manager was Case Team Leader, and Associate Partner was Principal. Search results still mix the two vocabularies freely, which is a common source of confusion when comparing figures across sites. The ladder is Associate Consultant, Senior Associate Consultant, Consultant, Manager, Associate Partner, Partner, Senior Partner.
Bain's integration with the private equity ecosystem is the strongest in MBB, and it affects compensation in two ways. Manager is the most common exit point precisely because PE and portfolio-company roles are available and lucrative. And Partners with strong PE books of business often outearn their McKinsey and BCG peers, despite Bain sitting marginally lower on typical mid-level pay.
Total first-year compensation at the two hiring entry points, in local currency. The US Associate Consultant base is firm-published; everything else is triangulated.
| Office | Associate Consultant | Consultant, post-MBA | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $139,500 | $267,000 | Firm published |
| Switzerland | CHF126,000 | CHF240,000 | Indexed |
| Singapore | S$133,000 | S$254,000 | Partly reported |
| United Kingdom | £64,000 | £123,000 | Partly reported |
| Germany | €81,000 | €155,000 | Partly reported |
| Australia | A$126,000 | A$240,000 | Indexed |
| Canada | C$114,000 | C$219,000 | Indexed |
| UAE | $100,000 | $192,000 | Indexed |
| India | ₹2,511,000 | ₹4,806,000 | Indexed |
The US row is the only one we would defend to the dollar, because the base component is firm-published. Everything else is triangulated, and the Indexed rows are modelled from the US ladder rather than sourced office by office. Bain also pays relocation of $8,000 for moves under 600 miles and $15,000 for longer ones, which is not included above.
Base is identical across all three. The differences sit entirely in bonus structure.
| Firm | Undergraduate base | Post-MBA base | Max post-MBA total | Bonus character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bain | $112,000 | $192,000 | $285,000 | Highest ceiling |
| BCG | $112,000 | $192,000 | $310,000 | Highest target percentage |
| McKinsey | $112,000 | $192,000 | $267,000 | Lower target, steadier |
Read the maximum column carefully, because it is the most-cited and least-useful number on this page. Maximums describe the top of a distribution, not an expectation, and the sources behind each firm's ceiling use slightly different definitions. On typical outcomes some analysts place Bain 3 to 5 percent below McKinsey and BCG at mid levels. Bain also offers 25 days of PTO for MBA hires, the most in MBB, which no salary table captures. See the McKinsey and BCG pages for their ladders.
The pay bands above are fixed and firm-published. The only variable you control is whether you get the offer.
Bain is unusual among MBB in publishing its graduate base, so the entry figure here is firm-stated. Everything above Associate Consultant is triangulated, and we would rather label that plainly.
One caution on a figure you will see elsewhere: Bain's historical employee stock ownership plan was wound down in the early 1990s, so pages describing direct stock grants to consultants are decades out of date. The profit-sharing element today reaches consultants through 401(k) profit sharing and deferred distributions.
Bain's own job posting confirms $112,000 base for a US Associate Consultant. Add a signing bonus of about $5,000 and a performance bonus of up to $22,500 and total first-year compensation reaches roughly $139,500. Glassdoor reports the base is consistent across all US offices, and it matches McKinsey and BCG exactly.
The post-MBA Consultant base is $192,000, matching McKinsey and BCG and unchanged since 2023, with a $30,000 signing bonus. Typical first-year total lands near $267,000, but Bain's maximum performance bonus of up to $63,000 can push best-case year-one compensation to roughly $285,000, the highest ceiling in MBB.
Associate Consultant, Senior Associate Consultant, Consultant, Manager, Associate Partner, Partner, Senior Partner. Two titles were renamed: Manager was formerly Case Team Leader and Associate Partner was formerly Principal, so older sources use the old vocabulary. Associate Consultant to Partner takes approximately 10 to 12 years.
Base is identical at all three, $112,000 undergraduate and $192,000 post-MBA. Some analysts place Bain 3 to 5 percent below the other two on typical mid-level outcomes, while noting Bain has the highest maximum bonus in MBB. Bain Partners with strong private equity books often outearn their MBB peers, given Bain's closer integration with that ecosystem.
Not at Associate Consultant or Consultant level. Base is a cohort-wide published figure, which is precisely why Bain can post it publicly. Experienced hires have leverage over which level they enter at rather than over the salary attached to that level. Relocation support is standardised at $8,000 under 600 miles and $15,000 above.
Partners are equity owners with total compensation estimated from $650,000 rising past $1,400,000, and Senior Partners reported at $1M to $4M or more. The majority comes from profit sharing rather than base, which is around $450,000 at Partner level. Bain is a private partnership and does not disclose partnership income, so treat these as estimates.
Consultants are expected to promote within a set window at each level, typically two to three years, and if promotion does not come the firm works with them on an exit plan. Reported promotion rates run roughly 65 to 75 percent per level. This is why the salary ladder above should be read as a path most people leave partway through rather than a schedule everyone completes.
