By case-prep.comPublished August 10, 2026Updated August 21, 202610 min read

A McKinsey Business Analyst starts at roughly $112,000 base in the United States, landing near $135,000 all in for year one. Stay on the consulting track and that number compounds: post-MBA Associates clear $260,000, Engagement Managers sit above $300,000, and Partners cross seven figures once profit sharing kicks in. Use the ladder below to see what each level pays in your target office.

Pick a level, pick an office

Base salary at McKinsey is set by level, not by city, so a Business Analyst in Chicago earns the same as one in New York. Across countries the picture changes completely, because each office pays to its local market.

What actually moves your number

McKinsey compensation is simpler than most candidates expect at the bottom of the ladder and far messier at the top. Four things determine what you take home, and only one of them is inside your control on day one.

Level sets base, and base is fixed

Base salary is a firmwide number attached to your level and your start year. Unlike investment banking, where New York carries a premium over regional desks, McKinsey does not run a US city differential. A Business Analyst in Atlanta and a Business Analyst in New York sign for the same base. That also means base is not negotiable at Business Analyst or Associate level. Everyone in your cohort gets the same letter. The exception is experienced hires coming in laterally, where the negotiation is about which level you enter at rather than the salary inside it.

Your rating drives the bonus, and the bonus drives everything after

Performance bonus runs roughly 10 to 20 percent of base at junior levels and becomes a much larger share as you climb, reaching close to half of total pay by Associate Partner. Two Associates on an identical $192,000 base can finish the year tens of thousands of dollars apart purely on rating. Then it compounds: roughly 90 percent of your prior year bonus rolls into next year base, so a strong rating raises your floor permanently rather than paying out once.

Country, not city

Geography is the single biggest swing factor on this page. On a currency basis, US offices pay the most at every level below Partner. Continental Europe generally lands at 60 to 75 percent of the US figure in local currency, with Switzerland closest to US levels. Singapore and Hong Kong pay nearer to US bands than the rest of Asia-Pacific. The Gulf offices often win on take-home despite lower gross pay, because there is no personal income tax in the UAE.

Above Associate Partner, salary stops being the point

Partner compensation is profit sharing, not payroll. Base stays meaningful at $400,000 to $650,000, but 50 to 70 percent of a tenured Partner income comes from distributions tied to the client portfolio they own. McKinsey is a private partnership and publishes none of this, so every Partner figure on this page is an estimate assembled from crowdsourced submissions and public wage filings one level down. Senior Partners share a single global profit pool rather than an office-level one, which is unusual among the MBB firms and means a Senior Partner in Sydney and one in New York are drawing from the same pot.

Do not read the currency gap as a lifestyle gap. A London Associate on total compensation near £150,000 is among the highest paid people of their age in the United Kingdom, and the UK package carries public healthcare and statutory family leave that the US package prices separately. Where you should be sceptical is the indexed rows: those are modelled from the US ladder against reported entry bands, not sourced office by office.

McKinsey against BCG and Bain

The honest answer at entry level is that there is no meaningful difference. MBB set the same floor and move within months of each other.

FirmUndergraduate titleBasePost-MBA titleBase
McKinseyBusiness Analyst$112,000Associate$192,000
BCGAssociate$112,000Consultant$192,000
BainAssociate Consultant$112,000Consultant$192,000

The $192,000 post-MBA base has been the MBB floor since 2022 and has not moved since. Where the three firms actually diverge is bonus ceilings, promotion timing, PTO and the shape of the senior ladder, none of which shows up in an offer letter. A single strong or weak performance rating will swing your total by more than any base gap between the three. If you are choosing between MBB offers on money, you are choosing on noise. Choose on office, project mix and the people who interviewed you, and the rest of the market clusters below these three rather than above them.

The pay bands above are firmwide and fixed. The only variable you control is whether you get the offer at all.

Where these numbers come from

McKinsey does not publish salary bands, so no page on the internet can give you a certified figure. What we can do is tell you exactly what each number rests on, which most salary pages will not.

Sources, most to least direct
  • Levels.fyi crowdsourced submissions. Individual reported packages, used for US Engagement Manager and Associate Partner figures. Average Engagement Manager total compensation is reported at $309,200 on a $234,806 base with a $74,394 bonus.
  • Public wage filings. H-1B petition disclosures give a government-record view of base salary for sponsored roles, useful as a cross-check at Associate Partner level where crowdsourced samples thin out.
  • Management Consulted 2026 Consulting Salary Report. The industry reference for full-time and internship bands. Source of the internship figures on this page: $36,923 for the US summer, C$38,076 in Canada, and £16,400 plus up to £5,000 relocation in the UK.
  • Glassdoor and Indeed. Used for the UK bands, where reported London Business Analyst pay clusters near £52,000 across job postings. Self-reported data skews toward lower-tenure employees, which is why Partner-level Glassdoor averages look compressed.
  • Indexed estimates. Switzerland, UAE, India, Canada and Australia are modelled from the US ladder against reported regional entry bands. These rows are labelled Indexed and should be used for relative comparison, not for evaluating an offer.

Common questions

A McKinsey Business Analyst in the United States earns roughly $112,000 in base salary, plus a performance bonus of about $18,000 and a signing bonus near $5,000, for total first-year compensation of around $135,000. Reported ranges run from $130,000 to $155,000 depending on rating and signing terms. This is the undergraduate entry point, and the base figure is set firmwide rather than by office.

The post-MBA Associate base is $192,000, with a performance bonus up to about $40,000 and a signing bonus near $30,000, putting first-year total compensation at roughly $262,000. That base has been the MBB floor since 2022 and has not changed since. If you joined McKinsey as a Business Analyst and left for a sponsored MBA, this is the level you return at, which roughly doubles your pay overnight.

No. McKinsey does not operate a US city differential, so a Business Analyst in New York, Chicago, Atlanta or Denver signs for the same base. Reported city averages on sites like Glassdoor do vary, but that reflects role mix rather than pay policy: larger offices hold proportionally more senior consultants, which pulls the reported average up. Across countries the differences are real and large.

Not at Business Analyst or Associate level. Base is a cohort-wide number, which is also why there is no gender pay gap at these levels: there is no room for it. Experienced hires have leverage, but it is leverage over which level you enter at rather than the salary attached to that level. Signing and relocation terms occasionally have some flexibility, particularly for international moves.

Estimates put total Partner compensation at $700,000 to $1,500,000, built on a base of $400,000 to $650,000 with the remainder coming from profit distributions. Senior Partners can reach $1,500,000 to $5,000,000 or more in strong years. McKinsey is a private partnership and discloses none of this, so treat every figure at this level as an informed estimate rather than data. The clearest public anchor sits one level down at Associate Partner, where crowdsourced medians land near $418,000.

Faster than almost any other career track. Annual raises tend to run 10 to 20 percent, because roughly 90 percent of your prior year performance bonus rolls into base. Promotions arrive every two to three years and carry much larger step changes, with the Business Analyst to Associate jump and the Engagement Manager to Associate Partner jump being the two steepest. Someone who enters as a Business Analyst and stays on track can be earning seven figures 12 to 15 years in, though very few people do stay.

Summer internships pay prorated full-time salary at the corresponding level. Reported figures for the current cycle are $36,923 for the US summer programme, C$38,076 in Canada, and £16,400 in the UK with up to £5,000 in relocation support. Interns who convert typically receive a signing bonus of $10,000 to $15,000 on top of the standard full-time package.

Not in any way that should affect your decision. All three pay approximately $112,000 base at undergraduate entry and $192,000 post-MBA, and adjustments at one firm are typically matched by the others within six to twelve months. Real divergence shows up in bonus ceilings, promotion timing and PTO rather than base. A single performance rating will move your total compensation by more than the gap between the three firms.
