The McKinsey interview process, step by step

Based on public information and reports from past candidates, most people move through four stages, though the process can vary by office and role. Every resource in the hub maps to one of them.

Application and resume

Recruiters typically screen for impact, leadership and academics. A vague resume ends the process before it starts, so this is where your prep begins.

See each tool, then try it yourself

The package unlocks every practice tool below. Each one comes with a practice question in the style of a McKinsey interview to try right here.

Ten cases in the interviewer-led format

McKinsey is known for interviewer-led cases: you get a series of questions covering structure, exhibits, math and a final recommendation. Answer each one, then compare against a model answer.

Try it: case opener

A US specialty pharmacy chain's operating margin fell from 9% to 5% in two years. The CEO wants to know why. Which opening structure is strongest?

Pick one, then check your answer.

Build a clean structure in 60 seconds

Case interviews often open by asking how you would approach the problem. Framework drills train you to build a MECE, case-specific structure fast.

Try it: framework

A coffee chain is deciding whether to open stores in Mexico. A candidate proposes three buckets: market attractiveness, competition, and the client's capabilities. Which bucket is missing?

Pick one, then check your answer.

Mental math under pressure

Case interviewers expect clean math without a calculator. Drill the operations that show up most, against the clock.

Try it: break-even

A new plant costs $60 million to build. Each unit it produces earns $150 in contribution margin. How many units does the client need to sell to break even?

No calculator. Type a number like 250,000 or 250k.

Read the chart, find the story

Most case interviews include at least one exhibit. Practice pulling out the insight that moves the case, out loud, before the interviewer asks.

Questions about the package

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $39.99 once. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel.

When do my 3 months of drills start?

When you activate them from your dashboard, not when you buy. You can buy early and start the clock when your prep begins.

What do I keep after the 3 months?

Your 10 cases, the PDFs, the Solve simulators, the question bank and the course all stay in your account for good. Only the unlimited drills are time-limited.

How does the resume review work?

Upload your resume from your dashboard. A consultant at a top US firm leaves detailed comments you can read in your account. If you want another round after that, you can buy one.

Is it for undergrad or MBA candidates?

Both. Every case is marked with its level, and the course and drills apply to either.

Will I get these exact questions in my interview?

Probably not, and no one can promise that. The reported questions come from past candidates, not from McKinsey, and show you the style and difficulty to expect.

I already own the Solve Hub. Is the package still worth it?

The package price is the same for everyone. You still get the new cases, drills, course, question bank and resume review, and your Solve access carries on as before.

Is case-prep.com affiliated with McKinsey?

No. We are an independent interview practice platform, not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by McKinsey & Company. Our cases, simulators and drills are our own practice materials.

Package or Premium?

If McKinsey is your main target, the package covers it for one price. If you are interviewing at several firms over a longer stretch, Premium gives you the full case library and drills for every firm.

Walk into your McKinsey interview ready for every round.

Solve simulators, new cases, drills, a full course, reported questions and a resume review. One purchase, one hub.
